On May 5, 2020, USTR formally launched trade agreement negotiations with the United Kingdom. The first round of negotiations concluded May 15. The two sides exchanged their first market access offers in early September. The fifth round of negotiations got underway on Oct. 19.

In June 17, 2020 testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer emphasized that the U.S. will not agree to a trade deal unless the UK lowers barriers that inhibit U.S. meat exports and adopts meat trade standards based on sound science.
