Slow Week for U.S. Pork Sales, Strong Week for Beef Exports

Beef exports/sales

U.S. beef exports for the week of Nov. 27-Dec. 3 totaled 12,900 metric tons (mt), up 15 percent from the previous week and 5 percent above the previous four-week average. Exports increased to Japan (2,960 mt, +2 percent), South Korea (2,680 mt, +13 percent), Mexico (1,880 mt, +15 percent), and Taiwan (910mt, +44 percent and the largest since August). These increases plus steady exports to Hong Kong (2,820 mt) more than offset a fall in exports to Canada (1,120 mt, -4 percent).

Beef net sales were 7,500 mt, up 40 percent from the previous week but 15 percent below the previous four-week average. Sales increased to Japan (2,260 mt, +38 percent) but slowed to other major destinations including Korea (2,000 mt, -15 percent), Hong Kong (950 mt, -28 percent), Mexico (840 mt, -52 percent), Canada (810 mt, -12 percent) and Taiwan (310 mt, -42 percent). Net sales for 2016 delivery were reported for Hong Kong (1,200 mt), Korea (1,100 mt), Taiwan (400 mt) and Japan (300 mt).

Pork exports/sales

U.S. pork exports totaled 18,100 mt, up 7 percent from the previous week but unchanged from the previous four-week average. Exports increased to Mexico (6,920 mt, +13 percent), China (1,300 mt, +13 percent) and Taiwan (170 mt, +24 percent), but trended lower for Korea (2,380 mt, -3 percent), Canada (1,530 mt, -3 percent), Hong Kong (530 mt, -16 percent), Australia (230 mt, -50 percent) and Colombia (270 mt, -38 percent). Exports to Japan were steady at 3,800 mt.

Pork net sales were 5,900 mt, down 59 percent from the previous week and 61 percent below the previous four-week average. Sales to Canada (1,500 mt, +20 percent) and the Dominican Republic (240 mt, +62 percent) increased, but sales slowed to most other primary destinations including Mexico (2,750 mt, -4 percent), Japan (1,400 mt, -68 percent and the lowest since September), China (360 mt, -74 percent), Korea (210 mt, -85 percent), Hong Kong (140 mt, -80 percent and the lowest since September) and Taiwan (110, -51 percent). Corrections resulted in negative net sales for Colombia (-640 mt) and Australia (-550 mt). Net sales for 2016 delivery were reported for Japan (2,100 mt), Australia (700 mt), Mexico (700 mt) and Colombia (600 mt).
