In January 2022, U.S. sausages gained access to a promising new market – Nigeria. At more than 200 million, Nigeria’s population is by far the largest in Africa and ranks seventh largest in the world.
The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Export Library entry for Nigeria now lists “Sausage and similar products under HS Code 1601.00.10.00” as eligible for export. All federally inspected plants are eligible. While all raw beef, pork and poultry products remain ineligible for Nigeria, the ability to promote sausages and similar processed products creates an opportunity to introduce U.S. red meat into this previously closed market.
