The USDA’s Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS) in Cairo has notified USMEF that the Egyptian government is planning an audit of U.S. beef establishments. The audit is expected to take place in November or December of this year, and FAS has asked USMEF to coordinate logistics with exporters.
The focus of the audit will be on halal procedures. Egypt’s protocol for approving foreign establishments requires an in-person audit. Therefore, plants that are currently not on the eligible plant list for Egypt must participate in this audit to become eligible. Establishments interested in being audited in order to be added to the approved list should make their interest known to one of the approved Islamic centers, which are also included on the eligible plant list.
