Update on Canada-EU Trade Agreement

European Union Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström and Canadian Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland announced today that the legal review of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) English text has been completed. In a joint statement, Malmström and Freeland expressed confidence that CETA will be signed by the end of this year and will enter into force in 2017.

The two sides announced conclusion of CETA negotiations in 2014, but progress on the agreement has been slowed by controversy over its investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) provisions. A revised approach to this issue is detailed in a separate European Commission news release.

The full CETA text is now available online. The Canadian government also posted an updated FAQ document on the agreement and the European Commission issued an updated factsheet.
