Resolution #2013-5-3
SUBMITTED BY: | Exporter Committee |
DATE: | May 24, 2013 |
TITLE: | Educational Outreach to Foreign Governments on Science-based Trade |
WHEREAS, | The U.S. meat safety system is built on a foundation of science and risk management; and |
WHEREAS, | The global trading rules for agriculture and food products, including pork, beef and lamb, require standards to be based on scientific risk assessments; and |
WHEREAS, | The standards and regulatory requirements of a growing list of countries rely on a precautionary philosophy that attempts to eliminate rather than manage risk and substitutes the perception of risk for science-based risk assessments, |
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, | That USMEF should partner with the U.S. government and other meat industry associations, packers, processors and technology companies to stop the use of non-science-based standards and the precautionary regulatory philosophy behind them through a dedicated education campaign directed at public health and policy officials in leading export markets for pork, beef and lamb. |
