Arbitration Meetings Held in COOL Dispute with Canada, Mexico

Arbitration meetings before the WTO dispute settlement body were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 15 and Wednesday, Sept. 16 to establish damages in the dispute regarding the United States’ country-of-origin labeling (COOL) regulations for meat. Canada is seeking authorization for about $2.3 billion in retaliatory tariffs, while Mexico is seeking $653 million. USTR responded to those claims in this recent filing.

There is no specific timeline for an arbitrator’s decision, but based on past proceedings USMEF expects a decision to be issued in mid-to-late November.
