West Coast Port Labor Negotiations Resume, but Contract Announcement Unlikely until after Aug. 1

This week the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) took a two-day pause (July 21-22) from contract negotiations for a previously scheduled longshore division caucus meeting. Contract talks resumed Wednesday, July 23, but another break in negotiations is scheduled for July 28-Aug. 1 so that the ILWU can attend to an unrelated contract negotiation in the Pacific Northwest.

While the previous contract expired July 1 and no extension is in place, both parties have pledged to keep West Coast ports operating during negotiations. The contract being negotiated covers 29 ports in California, Oregon and Washington.
