On Sept. 26, Vietnam and the European Union completed their ninth round of free trade agreement negotiations, which were originally launched in June 2012. More details are available in this European Commission news release.
While Vietnam is still a small destination for European pork, exports have expanded significantly in 2014. Through July, EU pork/pork variety meat exports to Vietnam increased 655 percent year-over-year in volume to 7,617 metric tons (mt) and 528 percent in value to $9.7 million – making it one of several Asian destinations that has seen a large influx of European pork since Russia closed to imports from the EU on Jan. 30.
EU beef/beef variety meat exports to Vietnam were also higher through July, increasing 47 percent in volume (2,402 mt) and 98 percent in value ($8.6 million).
