USDA-AMS Issues Requirements for Beta Agonist-free QSVP Program

On Nov. 5, the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) unveiled a Quality Systems Verification Program (QSVP) for establishments that wish to supply pork or beef to customers requiring verification that the meat is free of beta agonist residues and is derived from hogs and cattle that were never fed beta agonists.

Although many will likely associate the QSVP rollout with the current trade impasse with Russia, it is important to note that the program is not specific to any export market and has not been approved by any trading partner – including Russia. Industry associations worked closely with USDA on the design of the program, which allows packers to get third-party verification of their beta-agonist-free claims from AMS. If you have questions about the program, please contact the USMEF Export Services staff at 303-623-6328.
