U.S.-Japan TPP Talks to Resume Next Week

U.S. negotiators were reportedly encouraged by this week’s bilateral Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) talks with Japan, but cautioned that tough issues remain regarding market access for pork, beef, dairy and sugar. Acting Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Wendy Cutler said the two sides agreed to resume talks next week in Canberra, Australia, ahead of the Oct. 25-27 TPP ministerial meetings in Sydney.

On Oct. 14, President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke by phone regarding the TPP talks. The White House issued a brief readout on their discussion.
