TPP Round Concludes with No Breakthrough; No Dates Set for Next Meeting

A ministerial round of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations concluded July 31 in Hawaii, but the closing press conference was postponed beyond the publication time of our Export Newsline. While trade ministers from the 12 participating countries expressed optimism that a final agreement was within reach, a number of key issues remain unresolved. In the area of agricultural market access, the spotlight in the latest TPP round was mainly on dairy, sugar and rice issues.

There had been some speculation that TPP trade ministers would assemble again Aug. 24-25, but recent news reports suggest their next meeting will not take place until next month.
