TITLE: Science-based Trade


WHEREAS, The U.S. pork, beef and lamb industries are among the most technologically advanced in the world; and


WHEREAS, This reliance on technology is critical to the U.S. red meat industry’s continued ability to compete in markets around the world; and


WHEREAS, It is the policy of the European Union and some other countries to prevent the development and adoption of new, safe production and processing technologies such as growth promoting compounds (e.g., hormones and beta agonists), pathogen reduction treatments, GMOs, cloning, etc.


WHEREAS, Ensuring global food security in the future will depend on continued investment in the development of safe, production-enhancing technologies and the availability of these technologies to food producing countries around the world,


THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That USMEF should work closely with industry partners through the Meat Industry International Stewardship Advisory Council (MIISAC) and the U.S. government to actively promote science-based trade policies and ensure the continued development and dissemination of new, safe production-enhancing technologies.
