One week after USDA’s announcement of a new BSE case in California, a partial import ban by Indonesia remains the only official change in market access for U.S. beef. The Indonesian market remains open to imports of boneless beef cuts from the United States, but has closed to beef variety meat, bone-in muscle cuts and other beef products.

While Indonesia’s decision is disappointing, U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) President and CEO Philip Seng says it was mainly due to Indonesia’s desire to bolster its own domestic beef production rather than actual concerns about BSE. Seng ad...

Read more here: Audio: Global Response to BSE Case Encouraging, but Maintaining Exports Still a Challenge

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today confirmed that, as part of its ongoing monitoring of livestock in the United States, an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has been detected in a dairy cow in central California. The animal was not presented for slaughter for human consumption, and never posed a risk to the food supply or human health.

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is continuing to investigate the case, which was confirmed late Monday, April 23, but preliminary results indicate that this is an atypical case of BSE.

One of this year’s best-performing regions for U.S. pork and beef exports has been Central and South America. Through February, pork exports were up 23 percent in value ($34.8 million) and beef exports had nearly doubled in value ($21.8 million) over the record pace of 2011.

TRANSCRIPT:
Dan Halstrom, USMEF senior vice president for marketing and communications, explains that one of the reasons behind this growth is that the region has rapidly matured from being strictly a “commodity” destination into a market that imports higher-quality, valued-added U.S. pork and beef cuts. Halst...

Read more here: Audio: Central-South America Maturing as Destination for Value-added Pork, Beef Products

USMEF Economist Erin Borror has just returned from Indonesia, where she had the opportunity to meet with key stakeholders in the red meat industry. In addition to observing advances in local beef production, Borror discussed the current environment for imported meat with importers and others involved in the country’s meat trade. With a growing middle class and a rapidly increasing need for protein, Indonesia has been a promising market for U.S. beef exports – especially beef variety meat. Last year U.S. beef exports to Indonesia reached nearly 18,000 metric tons valued at more than $28.2...

Read more here: Audio: Indonesia Promising for U.S. Red Meat Exports, but Market Access Obstacles Remain
