PMA, ILWU Open to Possible West Coast Port Labor Contract Extension

For the first time since their contentious contract negotiations concluded just over one year ago, the presidents of the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union said they are willing to ask their memberships to consider a West Coast labor contract extension beyond the current July 1, 2019, expiration date. This discussion took place Feb. 29 at the Annual TPM Conference, a major shipping industry convention held this week in Long Beach, California.

The counterpart organizations on the East and Gulf Coasts – the U.S. Maritime Alliance and the International Longshoreman’s Association – are currently discussing the possibility of a labor contract extension through September 2025, even though their current contract does not expire until September 2018.

A major local clerical division of the ILWU (Local 63-Office Clerical Unit) also announced this week that it has signed contracts covering most of its members, well ahead of the June 30 expiration date of the current contract.
