Reaching buyers from Indonesia’s thriving tourism industry was USMEF’s goal at Food, Hotel and Tourism Bali (FHT Bali), an international event that attracts hundreds of companies from the region’s lucrative hospitality sector. USMEF, which distributed U.S. pork and beef samples and educational information, received funding from the Pork Checkoff and the Beef Checkoff Program.

A total of 777 companies from 36 countries showcased products for visitors from across Indonesia, as well as neighboring countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia. The event was held in conjunction with the Salon Culinaire, a chef’s competition organized by the Bali Culinary Professionals.

“FHT Bali is recognized as the premier platform for Indonesia’s food, hospitality and tourism industry and provides the perfect opportunity to meet face-to-face with potential clients and reconnect with existing customers,” said Sabrina Yin, USMEF director in the ASEAN region. “The 2016 show was another great success for USMEF, promoting U.S. pork and beef in the Indonesian market and the entire region, resulting in some very promising business leads.”

Indonesia is predominantly a Muslim country, so pork consumption is low. However, Yin noted that Bali has a rapidly growing number of residents from other religions and ethnicities, so U.S. pork has opportunities for growth – especially considering the large number of tourists. More than 4 million people visited last year.

To supplement promotional efforts at this year’s FHT Bali, USMEF supplied U.S. bone-in short ribs for a dinner held by USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service for Indonesian importers, HRI and retail operators. The dinner provided an excellent venue for discussing market prospects for U.S. food and beverage products.
