China’s efforts to combat beef smuggling have intensified, especially in Guangdong Province

News outlets in China report that a new campaign to combat smuggling of imported beef is underway in Guangdong Province.

According to USMEF’s translation of a recent article from the He Xun financial network, authorities from a number of government agencies – including General Administration of Customs, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Food and Drug Administration, public security and marine police are engaged in a major effort to “inspect and intercept” shipments of beef entering the province illegally, and to break up smuggling operations.

The article further states that all transportation channels will be placed under surveillance, as well as cold storage facilities. Distribution of foodstuffs intensifies prior to Lunar New Year (Feb. 19 this year), and the article mentions that the campaign is designed to ensure food safety during the holiday period.
