Market Access Expansion for U.S. Beef

Resolution #2009-5-2

SUBMITTED BY: Exporter Committee

DATE: May 21, 2009

TITLE: Market Access Expansion for U.S. Beef

WHEREAS, For the past two years the U.S. government’s policy was to pursue beef market access agreements that were fully OIE consistent; and

WHEREAS, Political, technical and commercial conditions in many leading export markets preclude achieving fully OIE consistent agreements in the near term; and

WHEREAS, The U.S. beef industry would benefit from incremental gains in market access if policies are in place to address sanctions related to non-conforming products; and

WHEREAS, Due to political factors in key export markets and competitors, negotiations to achieve expanded market access must be initiated as soon as possible,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, USMEF will provide information and market intelligence for use by related industry associations to maintain pressure on relevant U.S. Government agencies to reach agreement on a new policy that will guide negotiations for expanded beef access consistent with the industry position as communicated to the U.S. government; and

LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED, USMEF will provide information to related industry associations validating the extreme urgency for action by relevant U.S. Government agencies.
