Maritime Safety Committee Proposes Flexible Period for Container Weight Verification Rules

On May 23, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced that its Maritime Safety Committee had reached agreement on a guidance document regarding upcoming changes in container weight verification requirements. Later in the week, the full guidance document was made available on the IMO website.

The announcement indicates that while the Maritime Safety Committee opposes any postponement of the July 1 effective date of the new container weight verification rules, it proposes a three-month period in which port control authorities should use flexibility in enforcing them. USMEF will provide further updates on this proposal as more information becomes available.
