Key Topic – Russia Beef Access

Russia announced a ban, effective Aug. 7, 2014, on beef imports from the U.S., Canada, Australia, Norway and the EU in retaliation for economic sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine. Because imports from the U.S. (since early 2013), Canada and Australia were already banned due to beta agonist and hormone-related issues, the ban is not expected to impact beef exports from these countries. However, Russia was the EU’s largest beef export market, so Europe’s beef industry has been impacted. Russia’s primary beef suppliers are now Brazil and Paraguay.
