EU Duty-free Beef Quota Usage Moderates

Utilization of the EU’s duty-free high-quality beef quota moderated in late April and early May.

As of May 8, tonnage used in this quarter stood at 5,535 metric tons (mt), with another 216 mt awaiting allocation. The total volume available for this quarter (which is the final quarter of the quota year) is 13,067 mt. So at its current pace, the quarterly quota allocation will reach its critical phase (90 percent utilization) by June 18 and reach full capacity by June 26. USMEF will provide further updates later in the quarter.

Argentina recently completed its first shipments under the duty-free quota. Paraguayan beef recently regained access to the European Union (following an FMD-related closure) but is not eligible to utilize the duty-free quota.
