As we have reported periodically over the past several weeks, the European Union’s duty-free high-quality beef quota is on pace to reach full capacity near the end of June – which is also the end of the 2014-2015 quota year. Through June 18, shipments cleared under the quota during the March-June quarter totaled 11,060 metric tons (mt), with another 223 mt awaiting clearance. Remaining volume available through the end of June is 1,784 mt.
Shipments trended higher during the second week of June, raising concern that the quota may reach full capacity before the end of the month. But volumes moderated over the past week, meaning available capacity should be sufficient to accommodate shipments arriving in June. The duty-free quota was created in 2009, and this will mark the first time it has reached full capacity.
