EPA with Australia Receives Parliamentary Approval in Japan

On Nov. 7, the upper house of Japan’s Diet approved the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA). The Australian government is also working to ratify the agreement, which will likely come into force in early 2015.

Japan currently subjects Australian beef to the same 38.5 percent import duty rate that is imposed on U.S. beef. But upon implementation of the JAEPA, import duties on Australian chilled beef will drop to 32.5 percent and duties on frozen beef will be 30.5 percent.
