COOL Ruling Appealed

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has appealed the recent ruling of the World Trade Organization (WTO) compliance panel on the United States’ mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL) requirements for meat. Notice of the appeal and other details are available from the WTO website.

Trade officials from Canada and Mexico have stated their intention to implement retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products if the COOL requirements are not amended. But WTO authorization for retaliatory measures will not be issued until after the appeal process is complete and only if the compliance panel ruling is upheld.
