CFIA Confirms BSE Case in Alberta

On Feb. 12, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced confirmation of a new BSE case involving a beef cow in Alberta. More details are available in this CFIA news release.

South Korea has reportedly suspended imports of Canadian beef. Canada exported 3,199 mt of beef/beef variety meat to Korea last year (about 1 percent of its total export volume), valued at $23.1 million.

While access for Canadian beef in its top four markets (U.S., Hong Kong, Mexico and Japan) is not expected to be impacted, trading partners to watch include China and Saudi Arabia – both of which remain closed to U.S. beef due to BSE. USMEF will report any further changes in market access for Canadian beef as more details become available.
