On May 19, the Senate Appropriations Committee marked up and approved the FY 2017 Agriculture Appropriations bill. As approved by the committee, the bill includes full funding of $200 million for the USDA Market Access Program (MAP) and $34.5 million for the Foreign Market Development (FMD) Program, as authorized by the 2014 farm bill. This is also the case with the House version of the bill, which cleared the House Appropriations Committee on April 19.
It is not yet clear when, or whether, the full House or Senate will hold a floor debate on their respective versions of the Agriculture Appropriations bill. But as the FY 2017 appropriations process moves forward, USMEF members are encouraged to contact legislators in support of the MAP and FMD programs, which provide critical funding for international marketing of U.S. beef, pork and lamb, as well as other U.S. agricultural exports.
