Market Overview

Beef
On February 10, 2006, shipments of U.S. beef landed in Taiwan. These were the first since June 2005, when Taiwan reinstated a ban on U.S. beef after the announcement of a second case of BSE in the United States. Once U.S. beef products were available in retail markets, a survey by the Department of Health in Taiwan indicated 65 percent of consumers would buy U.S. beef. By the end of 2006, exports of U.S. beef to Taiwan surged to 21,409 mt worth $101 million and U.S. beef had a 25 percent share of the Taiwan import market in volume terms. Taiwan is now the fourth leading export market for U.S. beef, though bone-in cuts and beef variety meat are still banned.

Pork
Taiwan is nearly self-sufficient in pork so imports are used in processing and to cover seasonal spikes in demand or regular short supplies of specific cuts. In 2005, scandals in Taiwan involving the sale of sick and diseased hogs, which continue to have a negative impact on demand in 2007, devastated overall pork demand and U.S. exports declined dramatically. However, in 2006, U.S. exports to Taiwan increased 3 percent, reaching 25,198 metric tons (mt), representing a 56 percent share of Taiwan’s import market.

U.S. Beef Satisfies Runners After Competition
Runners, who participated in the Mercuries Jogging Competition early Sunday (Oct. 28) morning in Taipei, were able to catch their breath after the race while waiting in a long line for samples of U.S. beef.

This is the second year USMEF has participated in this event, setting up a booth for runners to reload protein supplies after a long race. This is a great opportunity for USMEF to enable consumers to try U.S. beef because once they try it, they want to know where they can buy it.

“Many who tried U.S. beef came back and asked us to sell the U.S. beef we had at the booth,” said April Fan, a USMEF Taiwan staff member who helped out at the USMEF booth.

U.S. beef samples attracted thousands of athletes. More than 200 pounds of U.S. beef round and short plate were handed out within two hours. U.S. beef eye of round is a new item USMEF promoted to consumers and short plate is the most popular cut in Taiwan for Japanese-style restaurants.
