Market Overview
Beef
Prior to its BSE ban, South Korea was one of the major export markets for U.S. beef, ranking third in export destinations and accounting for roughly 19 percent of all U.S. beef exports on a volume basis and 22 percent on a value basis. Although the ban was removed in September 2006, product has been slow to move into the market as South Korea has been very strict in its enforcement of its boneless import requirements. However, the U.S.-Korea FTA, once adopted by the legislatures in both countries, will improve access and bring about the eventual elimination of tariffs on all imports of U.S. beef.

Pork
Exports of U.S. pork to South Korea have increased dramatically in the past several years, now accounting for 26 percent of South Korean total pork imports. In 2006, exports of U.S. pork and pork variety meat jumped 52 percent to 109,198 metric tons (mt), worth $232 million. Significant increases in domestic pork prices and decreases in the value of the U.S. dollar have fueled the trend, making U.S. pork more appealing. In particular, U.S. chilled pork is optimally positioned as a reasonably-priced, high-quality product and U.S. pork prices are generally very competitive.

Ads Encourage Consumers To Enjoy U.S. Beef
Newspaper advertisements in South Korea are spreading the message to consumers that U.S. beef is wholesome, tasty and affordable.
Ads appeared in three top-tier newspapers, 10 daily newspapers, two business newspapers and two free newspaper publications in South Korea promoting U.S. beef dishes for Chuseok, the Korean Thanksgiving holiday, which is celebrated Sept. 25 this year.
Many Koreans return to their hometowns for this holiday to pay respect to their family and celebrate harvest crops, which are considered to be a blessing from their ancestors.
Each advertisement evokes this spirit with one featuring a photo of a three-generation American family in a field of crops with the message that U.S. beef exported to Korea is the same quality product served to families in the United States. The other advertisement shows how U.S. beef can be used in Chuseok dishes that each member of the family will enjoy.
